Council Cash for Alnwick Cricket Club

A north Northumberland cricket club is hoping the good times will roll after it took delivery of new equipment thanks to a grant from Northumberland County Council.

Alnwick Cricket Club has been given a cash boost of £3,000 from the county council’s  Community Chest to purchase a new roller which will be used to prepare the wickets before games and ensure the cricket field is kept in tip top condition for the summer season.

Financial help was also provided by The Joicey Trust and through fundraising activities.

With over 50 matches  played at the ground each season by club, county, local schools, junior and ladies teams, their existing roller from the 1950s was struggling to keep up with the workload.

Northumberland County Councillor Nick Oliver cabinet member with responsibility for corporate resources said:

“ Our community chest scheme aims to support Northumberland’s diverse range of voluntary groups and organisations working hard for the benefit of residents across the county. ”

Local Ward member Robbie Moore said:

“ The club caters for a wide age range, and has an enthusiastic local membership.
We are delighted to have been able to offer financial support for the club which encourages sport, fitness and friendship.”

Local ward member Councillor Gordon Castle said: “This is a good example of modest amounts of public money being used for immediate social benefit with the minimum of red tape and bureaucracy, but still enough member scrutiny to ensure it is being spent wisely.”

The council’s community chest scheme aims to support activities that will benefit and are needed by local communities.  It is open to any voluntary or community, not-for-profit groups or organisations based in, or predominantly serving Northumberland.
