Council shortlisted for two prestigious local government awards

Northumberland County Council has been shortlisted in two categories at this year's prestigious Municipal Journal Awards which recognise outstanding achievement in local government.

The council has been shortlisted in the Digital Transformation and Transforming Workforce Improvement categories.

A new digital solution called The Wizard , a central database for all aspects of Early Years work impressed the judges of the Digital Transformation category. It is helping to swiftly administer the free childcare entitlement to eligible working families across Northumberland and has resulted in local parents being able to easily access their free entitlement, maintain employment or get back into work. It  has also supported local childcare providers by administering early years funding promptly.

The  authority has also been shortlisted in the Transforming Workforce Improvement category for its work to support its staff achieve their full potential.

The council has introduced a new organisational development strategy and workforce committee to coordinate improvement initiatives across the 4,000 plus workforce which is spread across a diverse organisation and vast geographical area.

The various initiatives have helped improve employee recruitment, satisfaction  and retention and reduce sickness absence.
Recent workforce improvements include  training, learning and development and the recognition of good work through an internal awards scheme. Health support has also been introduced to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of staff who need it.

Leader of Northumberland County Council, Cllr Peter Jackson said:
“ As a forward-thinking council we are always looking at how we can improve services and do things differently and more efficiently.
“ We set high standards in all that we do and these awards are well deserved recognition for our staff, who work extremely hard to deliver quality services.”

The Municipal Journal Awards take place on 27 June, 2018.
