School catering manager shortlisted for Golden Rolling Pin Award

A school catering manager from Newsham Primary School has been shortlisted for the final of Employee of the Year in a regional awards scheme that recognises excellence in education catering.

Shirley Weaver has reached the final in the Golden Rolling Pin award for her outstanding commitment, enthusiasm and dedication to her job.

Mrs. Weaver  has worked in Northumberland County Council’s School Meal Service for the past 20 years, and for Newsham Primary School since 2014.

Mrs Armstrong, Headteacher at Newsham Primary School said:

“Shirley is a true professional and is held in the highest regard by everyone in our school community. She has injected fun into meal times and has had a fantastic impact on the life of our school.”

During her time at Newsham Shirley has increased the menu choices available to the pupils, she bakes star shaped biscuits for the school’s Star Pupils of the Month, prepares afternoon tea weekly for the Star Pupils of the Week and a firm favourite with the children is when they select Pudding of the Week, which is then served on Fridays. Themed lunches that link into the curriculum are also incredibly popular and the kitchen team enter into the spirit and wear theme related fancy dress for the occasion.

Not surprisingly, since her time at Newsham Primary School, there has been a significant increase in take up of school meals of around 100 meals a day.

Mrs Armstrong added that “Shirley is enthusiastic, innovative and organised.  Her sunny personality always shines through and she is an integral member of the staff team: involving herself fully in the life of our school. We wish her every success on Friday and will be there to offer our encouragement and support. ”

Councillor Robert Arckless cabinet member for children’s services at Northumberland County Council said:

“ We provide ourselves in offering pupils across the county a great range of delicious, healthy school dinners.

“ Shirley is an inspiration and I am delighted that  all her hard work and dedication has been recognised. ”

Shirley is one of six finalists in the category at the LACA North East and Scotland Regional Awards for Excellence.    The results will be announced at an awards ceremony in Sedgefield on Friday (17th) evening. The awards acknowledge individuals and teams of people who continue to make a real difference in education catering.
