Your views are important to us.
Could you give your views and help shape services that meet the needs of SEND children and young people?

Northumberland Parent Carer Forum is the new Department for Education recognised parent carer forum for Northumberland. We work with the local authority, health and social care to improve services for children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and their families.

Communication is key to what we do. We listen to the experiences and wishes of families and make sure that those views are heard by those providing services, so that we can be part of every stage of planning and decision-making. Wherever possible, we aim to work in co-production.

In order to represent the views of children, young people with SEND and their families, we need to hear from as many families as possible.

Results of the SEND survey: Understanding the impact of COVID-19 on children, young people and their families

We carried out a survey between 6 July and the 14 August 2020 to find out about the impact of COVID-19 on children, young people and their families with SEND in Northumberland. We received the largest number of replies to a SEND survey, with 426 families replying and sharing their experiences. Thank you.

The findings show the impact that lockdown has had on family mental health, describe the challenges of home-schooling and the ongoing worry families have about keeping their children safe during the pandemic. The report can be accessed in two formats

What will happen now?

We have developed an action plan based on what you told us was important and the findings of the survey. You can see our plan by clicking here.

Disabled children and their families are being asked their views on ‘Short Breaks’ as part of Northumberland County Council’s review into the support offer.

Short breaks are currently provided to give a disabled child or young person time away from the family, giving them the opportunity to gain some independence, to have fun with their peers, make new friends and have new experiences. The breaks also offer parents and families a necessary and valuable break from caring responsibilities or to provide them with opportunities to take part in activities or trips together where they wouldn’t ordinarily be able to.

To take part head click here for the form, or if you wish to access a hard copy of the survey please email Sandra.Blackwood@northumberland.gov.uk or call 01670 623978.
