Information about radon gas in Northumberland
Radon
Radon is a naturally
occuring radioactive gas. You cannot see, hear, feel or taste
it. It comes from the decay of small amounts of uranium that occur
naturally in all rocks and soils. Radon is present in all parts of
the UK with some of the highest radon levels being found
in the south-west, but levels above the average have been found in
other parts of the UK.
About 40 per cent of
Northumberland has been identified as having 1 per cent or more of
homes in an area being at or above the Action Level of 200
Bequerels per cubic metre (Bq/m³). However, only 19 per cent
of Northumberland falls within areas identified as requiring
mitigation measures to be included in new properties or certain
extensions.
