Domestic Bins - How to Buy a Wheeled Bin

Household waste in Northumberland is collected
from the kerbside in two wheeled bins. The recycling bin
for paper, card, cardboard, food and drinks cans,
aerosols and plastic bottles is collected one week, and
the residual bin for all the other non-recyclable
waste is collected the following week. The standard size
wheeled bin issued is 240 litres in capacity.
The Council is offering the exchange free of
charge because of the waste minimisation benefits the
Council receives whereas downsizing the recycling bin only, does
not encourage recycling and is not available free of
charge.
Requests for a bigger
bin
Households with 6 or more occupants, or where
there are special medical circumstances that result in additional
waste generation, can apply for a larger 340 litre wheeled bin for
general waste subject to payment of £61 to cover the cost of
purchase and delivery. This charge may be reduced to £45 if
you have an existing 240 litre bin to exchange for the 340 litre
bin in lieu of its second hand value.
If your household has less than 6 permanent
occupants, then a request for a larger 340 litre wheeled bin for
general waste will only be considered if you can demonstrate that
despite making full use of recycling services and taking reasonable
measures to minimise your waste – you still regularly generate more
waste than can be accommodated in a standard 240 litre wheeled
bin. This charge may be reduced to £45 if you have an
existing 240 litre bin to exchange for the 340 litre bin in lieu of
its second hand value.
Sack collection
If the Council has determined that your
household is unable to accept a wheeled bin due to a lack of
storage space, then you will be provided with up to 2 black sacks
for general waste and 2 clear sacks for recycling per collection,
free of charge.
Lost, stolen or damaged bins
You are responsible for safeguarding your own
household bins and for taking them back onto your property within
24 hours of the bin being emptied. If your bin is lost,
stolen or damaged then you will be expected to pay for a
replacement.
The Council will only provide a free
replacement bin if it was damaged by the Council’s collection
vehicle or staff when it was being emptied; or if the Council has
agreed that your bins should be left permanently at the roadside to
avoid the collection vehicle from having to travel along private
roads/tracks.
We aim to deliver a replacement bin within 5
working days of payment being received.
Moving to a home without a bin
If you have moved into a home and
there are no bins provided, either because it is a newly built
property and they have not been provided by the developer or
it is an existing property and the previous occupier has
removed them, then you will be required to pay for the
provision of your recycling and general waste bins. It is
possible for you to obtain your own bins from other suppliers,
provided they meet the Council’s specification to ensure that they
are of the appropriate size, colour and quality. Details of
the specification can be made available upon request.
Cost of a bin
The charges for a new bin are
as follows:
£27 for a 140 litre recycling or general
waste wheeled bin
£32 for a 240 litre recycling or general
waste wheeled bin
£61 for a 340 litre recycling or general waste
wheeled bin
£378 for a 1100 litre recycling or general
waste wheeled bin
If available, you can request a second hand
bin that will still be in a serviceable condition and fit for
purpose. The price for a second hand bin is dependant upon
its general condition and age and these are made available on a
‘first come – first served’ basis.
