Waste receptacles (either wheeled bins or bags for those residents who receive them from the Council) prior to the day of collection should be securely stored on the resident's property, or at a place otherwise agreed with the Council. On the day of collection, residents are advised to place their receptacle by the set out time above with the handles facing the highway. Normally the agreed collection point will be on the pavement outside the resident's property, however where this is impracticable other locations may be agreed by the council. Residents should be aware that the Council may empty the wheeled bin at any time after the specified set out time. Once the Council has emptied the bin, we will return it to the agreed collection point. Residents should then return their bin back onto their property within 24 hours of the collection taking place - unless otherwise agreed with the Council

The set out times will be harmonised across the County following the completion of route optimisation work which will improve the way we collect waste in Northumberland.

Bank Holidays (including Easter and May Bank holiday)

Bank Holidays mean that we have to make some changes to bin collection schedules, please see the table below to view any changes in your area.

Please note that collections in the Berwick area are not affected by bank holidays.

Missed Bins

Missed bins will normally be collected within 24 hours of being notified, where practicable, and on a ‘no blame’ basis.  However, householders that repeatedly fail to put out their bin for collection on time will be allowed up to 3 missed bins per rolling 6 month period. If residents fail to put out their bin for collection in excess of this allowance, then they shall be advised that the bin will not be picked up until their next normal collection day and that they can either take any excess waste to the nearest HWRC or pay for a special bulk collection. To report a missed bin please use the 'Contact Us' details on the top right of each web page.

Side Waste

A ‘no-side waste policy’ is applied across the County whereby excess waste left alongside the bin is left in-situ and the householder is advised of the reasons for this.

Overloading of bins

Wheeled bins which are considered to be overloaded and unsafe to be moved or emptied are left in-situ by refuse collection staff, and the householder is advised of the reasons why this has occurred. Residents can take any excess waste to the nearest HWRC or pay for a special bulk collection.

Clinical Waste

Households who generate health care wastes should in the first instance seek the advice of their medical practitioners (i.e. district nurse, doctor) regarding the appropriate collection and disposal arrangements for their health care waste. Where arrangements with the NHS cannot be made then please contact the County Council to discuss your clinical waste collection and disposal requirements.
