BBC’s Carol to host LOVE Northumberland Awards
2013
|
Carol will be the presenter for the event at
the Alnwick Garden when community groups, environmental projects
and individuals who go the extra mile to improve their local
environment are honoured.
In their third year and growing in popularity
the awards are presented by the Duchess of Northumberland along
with main sponsor the Banks Group and other supporting
organisations, and this year’s event will take place on July
10th.
Carol’s involvement in the presentations was
announced this week when she paid a visit to one of last year’s
winning projects – The Corbridge Youth Initiative Allotment.
A group of volunteers aged between 11 and 18
have created their own vegetable plot, fruit orchard, greenhouse
and lawned ‘chill out’ area, and a shed is used for meetings and as
an educational base for the young people. The project has been
developed to encourage young people to get involved in the creation
of their own allotment, to promote healthy eating, outdoor activity
and education.
Carol Malia said: “I am really looking forward
to being the compere at the LOVE Northumberland awards this year –
and seeing more great work like this which is being done by the
Corbridge Youth Initiative.
“I am a huge lover of Northumberland myself
but I know that it takes hard work and dedication to make and keep
the county green and clean.”
There is still time to be in with the
chance of an award this year – with the deadline for entries Friday
May 31st.

About the campaign
‘LOVE Northumberland – Caring for our county’ is an exciting
campaign that aims to promote the work of Northumberland County
Council and its partners in preserving and improving the
environment in the county, celebrating community spirit and
promoting pride in the county.
It’s a campaign aimed at getting everyone in
Northumberland involved in keeping the county clean and green.
Northumberland is well known for its breath-taking scenery and wide
open spaces, but it also has a reputation for its environmental
quality.
The aims of the campaign are to:
- Promote the work of the council and its partners in keeping
Northumberland beautiful for residents and tourists.
- Encourage more people to report environmental problems and get
involved in work to protect our public spaces.
- Raise awareness of environmental issues.
- Promote our key messages on the environment to help us meet
targets
- Create a sense of joint ownership around Love Northumberland
issues.
Northumberland County Council wants to
maintain and improve on this ‘clean’ image, and is working hard to
keep the county beautiful. But we can’t achieve this alone – we
rely on the hard work and dedication of residents, businesses and
community groups to work together towards that goal.
We’re asking members of the public and partner
organisations to work with us to protect Northumberland’s greatest
asset – the fantastic environment - and pledge their support to
work with us.
We’re promoting the excellent record
Northumberland already has in this area, pushing all the ways
people can report neighbourhood issues, how they can become
environmental champions and what we’re doing to protect the
environment. Our three key messages are:
- We’re working hard to keep Northumberland beautiful.
- Get involved and help us to keep our environment pristine.
- We’re all working together – with residents and partners to do
the best possible job.
LOVE Northumberland aims to show how we all
care for our county by promoting the work of the council and all
its partners in keeping the county clean and green for the benefit
of all residents and visitors. The council tackles a range of
issues including fly-tipping and other environmental crime such as
graffiti. Local clean-up events, street cleaning as well as parks
and grounds maintenance are also covered by the council’s
officers.
Wherever you see the LOVE Northumberland banner you will know
that we are working with the local community to enhance your
area.
Volunteering in Northumberland
Most of us play our part by keeping our little
piece of Northumberland pristine. Across the county there are
also people who are willing to give up a bit more of their time to
improve their local environment. The work of these volunteers
is invaluable, and an important part of the LOVE Northumberland
campaign is providing support to environmental
volunteering.
We have developed a web resource where groups
can promote volunteering opportunities, and people with a bit of
time on their hands can find out what they can get involved in in
their local area. Find
out more now.
