Aiming High for Disabled Children (AHDC)
The former Aiming High for Disabled Children 3 year
government funded programme ceased on 31 March 2011. The aim of the
programme was to support local authorities to develop
additional short break care provision for disabled children
and young people in readiness for the introduction of the Short
Break Care Duty on 1 April 2011. All local authorities had to
produce their Short Break Duty Statement by October 2011 and this
needs to be periodically reviewed. Click here to view Northumberland
County Council's current Short Break Duty Statement.
Northumberland County Council and its partners are committed to
ensuring all children and young people are able to lead healthy,
safe and successful lives. The Children
and Young People's Plan (CYPP) 2011 - 14 sets out how the
Family and Children Trust (FACT) intends to support the continued
delivery of better outcomes for children and young people.
As a local authority we want to make sure our short
break provision is effective and provides a high quality service to
those who use it by providing clear information and offering a
diverse range of Short Break Care activities to meet the individual
needs of disabled children, young people and their families across
Northumberland.
We will, therefore, regularly evaluate the services provided
through both quality assurance, statistical data and feedback from
children & young people and their families. This feedback
will also inform the annual review of the Short Break
Duty Statement.
Parents and carers of children and young people with
additional needs require a single source of information about
services available to them. Local organisations can provide a
lifeline to families. In a county the size of Northumberland,
parents and carers often feel remote from central provision and can
feel isolated and alone, so knowing what is local to them is vital.
