Global Dimension - Run a Campaign in 2011
Hold a special awareness day, run an assembly,
get the pupils motivated to do something for someone else. Below is
a list of dates announced for 2011 with links to campaign
websites. From a non -uniform day to a fully flung event
there is something for every age of pupil. Please see dates
below where you can click on relevant links for further information
regarding events in 2011.
January 2011

Name-Calling Week (24 - 28 January 2011).
February / March 2011
Fair Trade
Fortnight (28 February - 13 March 2011). Think about
becoming a fair trade school or running a fair trade tuck shop.
Climate Week (21 - 27 March
2011). Climate Week is a supercharged national occasion
that offers an annual renewal of our ambition and confidence to
combat climate change.
World Water Day (22 March
2011). This year's theme is "water for cities -
responding to the urban challenge". UN-WATER and UN-HABITAT
are organising the day, content and key messages.
Tree Care Campaign (21 March - 21 September 2011). The
Tree Council's national Tree Care Campaign runs from March to
September and highlights the need for better care for all trees, in
order to ensure their survival and increase the number reaching
maturity.
Give It Some Welly for Woodland (4 March 2011). This is a
new fundraising event from The Woodland Trust, designed to help
realise our vital goal of doubling native tree cover in the
UK.
April 2011
International Mother Earth Day (22 April 2011). Mother
Earth Day is celebrated to remind each of us that the Earth and its
ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance.
Bike to
School Week (April 2011).
May 2011
Compost Awareness Week (1 -
7 May 2011). Please note, details regarding this event

Adult Learners' Week (14 - 20 May
2011).
Green Britain
Day (18 May 2011). This is an opportunity for schools to
invite parents and people from the local community to come and
celebrate their green projects.
Walk
to School Week (16 - 20 May 2011). This is an action
packed awareness week in May each year in which over 1 million
children take part.
Noise Action Week (23 - 27 May
2011).
Walk
in the Woods (May 2011). This is The Tree Council's
month-long festival to encourage everyone to enjoy trees and woods
in Spring.

National Family Week (30 May
- 5 June 2011).
World Environment Day (5
June 2011).
World Ocean's Day (8 June 2011). This year's theme is
"Youth - The next Wave for Change".
Carers Week (13 - 19 June 2011).
Recycle Week (20 - 26 June
2011). Please note, details regarding this event are

Green Day 2011 (Summer
2011). Green Day is an initiative that helps to make
schools sustainable. It will inspire pupils and colleagues in
your school to learn about climate change and how it relates to the
builidngs and spaces around them.
Team Great Britain Bike Week (June
2011). Details regarding this year's event are yet to be
completed, but please keep checking this link for
updates.
Lloyds TSB National School Sport
Week (27 June - 1 July 2011). The 2010 event saw 14,000
schools taking part and the 2011 week promises to be bigger and
better.
July 2011
World
Population Day (11 July 2011). This day aims to raise
people's awareness on various population issues such as the
importance of family planning, including gender equality, poverty,
maternal health and human rights.
International Bog Day (26 July 2011).
National Parks Week (25 - 31
July 2011).
August 2011
Playday (3 August 2011).
This is the national day for play, traditionally celebrated on the
first Wednesday in August.
World Youth Day (16 - 21 August
2011).
September 2011
Organic September 2011. As 2010's Organic Fortnight was
such a huge success, it has been decided to extend the fortnight to
a whole month. Organic September offers 31 days for retailers
and brands to influence new and lapsed consumers into purchasing
more organic products, more often. Check out the Soil
Association website for further details (link above).
International
Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer (16 September
2011). This day is celebrated on 16 September each year
to commemmorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances
that Deplete the Ozone Layer. This commemoration around the
world offers an opportunity to focus attention and action at the
global, regional and national levels.
International
Day of Peace (21 September 2011). Details regarding this
event are still being finalised, but please keep checking this link
to view details.
World Car Free Day (22
September 2011). Every 22 September, people from around
the world get together in streets, intersections and neighbourhood
blocks to remind the world that we don't have to accept our
car-dominated society. Why not compete class by class to see
who can get the largest number of walkers.
British Food Fortnight (17 September - 2 October 2011).
The tenth national food promotion takes place during Harvest
Festival, the traditional time for celebrating food. Think
local - think sustainable! Invite in a local company to talk
about their produce.
Tree Care Campaign (21 March - 21 September 2011). The
Tree Council's national Tree Care Campaign runs from March to

October 2011
Walk
to School Month (October 2011). This is a month long
event held in October every year where schools across the world
join forces to promote walking to school.
World Smile Day (7 October
2011). World Smile Day 2010 was an amazing
event. People all around the world observed the day, doing
acts of kindness and helping others smile.
Jeans for Genes Day (7 October
2011).
World Space Week
(October 2011). The theme for this year's World Space
Week is "50 Years of Human Spaceflight".
Global Day of Doing (10 October
2011). Please note, the website for this year's event is
still to be confirmed, but please click on the link for information
regarding last year's Global Day.
World
Habitat Day (3 October 2011). The United Nation's World
Habitat Day is annually celebrated on the first Monday in October
to to reflect on the state of human settlements and people's right
to sufficient shelter.
Seed Gathering Season (23 September - 23 October 2011).
The Tree Council aims to inspire everyone, particularly school
children and families, to gather seeds, fruits and nuts grow the
trees for the future.
Energy Saving Week (October
2011). Details regarding this year's event are still to
be finalised, but please click on the link to view further
information regarding previous events and the Energy Saving
Trust.
November 2011
International
Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and
Armed Conflict (6 November 2011). In 2001,
this day (to be held on 6 November each year) was declared by the
UN General Assembly.
National Anti-Bullying Week
(21 - 25 November 2011).
World Toilet Day (19 November
2011). The big squat! More than 80% of sewage in
developing countries is discharged untreated into lakes, rivers and
coastal areas ~ water which flows into your lakes and kitchens!
Road Safety Week (21 - 27
November 2011). This year's chosen theme is "too young to
die".
National Tree Week (26 November - 4 December 2011). This
is the UK's largest annual tree celebration launching the start of
the winter tree planting season. It is a great chance for
communities to do something positive for their local
treescape.

International
Day for the Abolition of Slavery (2 December).
Carers
Rights Day (3 December). Carers Rights Day is all about
knowing your rights. Details regarding this year's event are
yet to be confirmed, but please click on the link to view further

Volunteering Day (5 December 2011).
International
Human Rights Day (10 December 2011). The United Nations
Human Rights Day is observed annually on 10 December to mark the
anniversary of the presentation of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights.
