Northumberland’s First Walking Bus – Northburn Primary School

During 2006, concerns were raised at Cramlington Northburn School about the high volume of cars outside at peak times and the congestion and risk to child safety this raised.

In response, the school consulted children, parents, school governors, staff and local residents to draw up a school travel plan. Since the implementation of the plan, the school has launched Northumberland’s first walking bus62 which has been greeted with enthusiasm and success. All walking bus routes are risk assessed by highways engineers, children must wear high visibility jackets and caps and agree to a contract to ensure good behaviour and volunteers receive road safety training.  To read the full case study regarding Northburn Primary School, please click here
