How old do I have to be to vote?

People on the Youth Cabinet are aged between 13 - 19 therefore every 13 - 19 year old in Northumberland has the opportunity to vote.

Members of the Youth Cabinet are elected for a term of 2 years.

Why should I bother voting?

The candidates who are elected to the Youth Cabinet can change many things around Northumberland affecting you.The Cabinet members have a Budget to help achieve manifesto pledges. The Cabinet has the ability to get council ‘papers’ (official documents) before they are voted on and suggest new changes to policy and ways which the council can work better for young people.

The Youth Cabinet is your representation at official level and meets regularly with the Leader of Northumberland County Council and Executive Member for Children’s services, updating them on matters affecting young people.

Where can I read about the people standing for election?

Posters with every candidate and their 5 policies are sent to every school and should be up and around in school. If not, you can read about their policies online, as well as reading information about where the candidates are from and how old they are.

Where can I vote?

Every person aged 13 – 19 is eligible to vote. Ballot boxes are placed in every secondary and high school in Northumberland as well as some training providers. Postal votes are available for those who do not have access to a ballot box. Student Voice department’s in schools should be running the elections throughout the day. How does voting work and who is elected?

Everyone who is eligible to vote in the Youth Cabinet election can do so at their local polling station. Each voter has one vote to cast and the 5 candidates with the most votes are elected onto the Youth Cabinet.

How often are the Elections?

Elections are held every year, usually in December, to elect 5 new people to the Youth Cabinet.

How do people put themselves forward to run in elections?
