Contact the Superintendent Registrar in the district where you
both live to fulfil your legal preliminaries
Legal Preliminaries
If you wish to marry at a Register Office you both are
required to give a Notice of Marriage, in person to the
Superintendent Registrar in the district where you live.
You need to have resided in the district for a minimum 9
clear days before giving your Notice of Marriage. At present, the
fee of £35.00 is payable for each Notice of Marriage
given.
If either, or both of you live abroad or
outside England & Wales, it is extremely important that you
contact the relevant Superintendent Registrar as soon as possible
to ensure that all legal requirements, in particular residential
qualification, can be met in time for your proposed Wedding
Day.
You should telephone your local Register
Office to make an appointment to give your Notice of Marriage,
and at that time you will be advised of the documents you will be
required to produce. If you have any queries about the strict time
limits for the giving of the Notice of Marriage or residential
qualification or problems with documents please contact
the Register Office so we can help you resolve any
issues.
If you live in Northumberland the number you should contact is
01665 602870.
What happens next?
Once the Notice of Marriage is given, it is
displayed for 15 days after which an authority for your marriage to
proceed will be issued, provided all the required documentation has
been seen and cleared.
Under some legislation the period of display may be longer.
If the marriage is to take place in a different district to where
you live you need to give the relevant Registrar this authority
prior to the ceremony.
Once you have given your Legal Notice of Marriage, your booking
will be confirmed in our diary.
