The treatment of rats and mice inside your home is free. For all other pest control treatments there is a charge, including treatments in garages, gardens and outbuildings. Please Note if you are reporting rats or mice on someone else’s land or building please call 0845 600 6400 and ask for an inspection visit to be carried out.

We will leave advice and information with a responsible person after our treatment.

Advice Visits - Residential

The charge for an advice visit is £23.59.

An officer will call out to your property to assess the problem and give advice. If we advise a treatment is necessary and you agree, you will be asked to pay the remaining £22.37, the current charge for a treatment is £45.96.

  • Rats, mice, fleas, cockroaches, ants, bed bugs and fumigations a standard treatment generally requires an initial visit and up to two further re-visits

Your questions answered

Is there a charge for the Pest Control Service?

The treatment for rats and mice inside your house is free; For all other pest treatments, including in garages and outhouses, there is a charge.

Are there discounts available?

We charge a flat fee to keep costs down and make the service available and affordable to all residents.

Can you treat my neighbour’s property?

No.We must receive a request from the owner.

What if the rats/mice are coming from my neighbour?

If you suspect the rodents are living in your neighbour’s garden, the first thing to do is to let them know what you have witnessed. We would then advise both you and the surrounding neighbours to remove any food source for the next 7 to 10 days. If the problem persists further then you should contact us on 0845 600 6400.

How do I pay?

Does someone have to be in when we visit?

Yes. We will not enter premises unaccompanied for our own security and health and safety reasons. We need to leave advice and information with a responsible person after our treatment.

Are the chemicals used safe around humans and pets?

Yes, as long as all instructions and advice left by the Pest Control Officer are adhered to. We always take care when laying poisons to ensure that we minimise the risk of pets and other non target animals accessing the poison. In some cases we will not lay poison if the risk is too high. We will require the home owners to keep pets and children away from poisons and/ or insecticides used.

Can you treat wasp or bees nests on County Council land e.g trees, bushes or footpaths?

Wasp nests:Northumberland County Council pest control service will carry out treatments on council land if there is a danger to the public. However we cannot carry out any treatments on private land without the agreement of the owner.

Bees nests:We do not carry out treatments for bees of any kind. If you are not sure what type of bee you have visit The British Beekeepers Association to get the most appropriate advice.

Can you treat ants on footpaths?

No. We do not treat ants in gardens, footpaths or public areas. This is their natural habitat.

I have maggots in my wheelie bin, can you treat them?

No. After your bin has been emptied rinse it with hot water. Always keep your bin lid closed.

I think I have bats in my roof space, can you remove them?

No it’s illegal to remove or disturb bats. For further information please visit the Bat Conservation Trust website

What can I do about pigeons/seagulls?

Northumberland County Council do not carry out treatments for pigeons or seagulls. For advice and help please visit the Natural England website.

What services do you provide for businesses?

We carry out treatments for rats, mice, fleas, cockroaches, moles, wasps, ants, flies and bed bugs. We can provide rodent monitoring and prevention, rodent eradication treatments, insect identification and eradication, electronic fly killer units and fly screens.

How do I make sure my business stays free of pests?

We provide both one-off treatments and contracts for commercial customers to treat a range of pests that may be damaging to your business. A contract may be more cost effective, as we will monitor and survey your premises regularly, offer early morning appointments, offer free advice over the telephone and pest identification service.

How quickly do you respond to a request for a pest control treatment?

We aim to visit your premises within one working day wherever possible.

How much do you charge?

For one-off treatments such as wasps and flies, a standard treatment usually only requires one visit at a cost of £63.80. The treatment of rats, mice, fleas, cockroaches and ants generally require more than one visit. For these services there is a charge of £63.80 for the initial visit and £29.04 for each re-visit thereafter.

How can I pay?

You can book a one-off treatment online or over the phone on 0845 600 6400. Any further re-visits, if necessary, will be invoiced. If you prefer, we can invoice you for the entire treatment including re-visits. Please ring 0845 600 6400 to arrange for your treatment to be invoiced.

How do I find out about the contracts you provide?

I have a catering business – how would a pest infestation affect my business?

A pest problem in a business can seriously damage your reputation and you profitability.

Food businesses - to prevent the contamination of foodstuffs a food businesses must take all reasonable precautions to prevent food pests, such as rats, mice, cockroaches and flying insects gaining entry into food storage and preparation areas. Officers have the power to close down businesses where there is evidence of a pest infestation.

We provide advice visits at a cost of £29.04 where we will either identify the pest at the location or, if necessary, we can have it identified by a specialist company so we can carry out the most appropriate treatment.

Are there any pests you do not treat?

Currently we do not carry out treatments for the following pests: bats, bees, slugs, snails, spiders, pigeons, rabbits, squirrels, foxes or woodworm. For the treatment of these types of pest, contact a local pest control company.

Will people know I’ve got pest control officers on my premises?

No, we operate in vans that have only the Northumberland County Council logo on them. Our officers provide an efficient and discreet service.
