Although the General Election has yet to be called, council officials in Northumberland are already working hard to make sure that all eligible residents can have their say on polling day.
Election officers at Northumberland County Council will be sending forms to households around the county very soon to compile a new electoral register that will be the basis for next year’s elections.
All 150,000 householders in Northumberland are being asked to look out for the annual canvass form which will be dropping through letterboxes by the end of August. By completing and returning the form, Northumberland’s residents will be making sure they will be able to have their say on what matters to them.
If your registration details HAVE changed:
Electors are asked to simply complete the form, sign it and then return it to the council as soon as possible. Please note that if a child becomes 18 during the life of the register (December 1 , 2009 – November 30, 2010) they too should be included on the register, making sure their date of birth is also entered.
If your registration details HAVE NOT changed:
In both cases you will need the form in front of you.
Steve Stewart, chief executive and returning officer for Northumberland County Council said:
“ At every election people lose their right to vote because they don’t realise that to be eligible to vote they have to register.
The reality is that an election can be called at any time and the next one must be held by June 2010. If you aren’t on the electoral roll, you will miss out on the chance to have your say on how the country is run. You may not have decided who you’re going to vote for yet, or even if you are going to vote at all, but if you don’t register in time, then you are robbing yourself of the right to make that choice. ”
