Councillor Jim Smith and his wife Ann joined Northumberland’s chief fire officer Alex Bennett for a tour of the state-of-the-art fire service headquarters in West Hartford, near Cramlington.

During the visit, Councillor and Mrs Smith discussed the work of the fire service and put questions to officers.

West Hartford Community Fire Station and headquarters has been operational for almost two years. It was opened in November 2010 by HRH The Prince of Wales.

Chief fire officer Alex Bennett said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Jim and Ann Smith to our headquarters and useful to update them about the work of the service and show them around the community station. The building is an operational fire station with easy access to local towns and Northumberland’s road network. Since opening two years ago the community fire station has become a true hub and its meeting rooms are often used by local groups and organisations.”

As part of the community station there are facilities specifically designed for young people. A popular boxing club also runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays at the community station. The emphasis of the club is on exercise and male and female members, from 10-years-old to 40, train under the guidance of fire officers who are fully qualified Amateur Boxing Association coaches.
