Flood plan details available to view

06 July 2012 ( Archived )

Residents, businesses and anyone interested in seeing more details on the Morpeth flood scheme are invited to come along and talk to the project team.

The Environment Agency and Northumberland County Council are holding a drop in event in Morpeth Town Hall on Tuesday 10 July between 2.30pm and 8pm. Anyone is welcome to come along to find out more detailed information about the proposed design for the Morpeth Flood Alleviation Scheme and give their feedback.

Over the past six months the project team have been designing the scheme in detail and so now have more information to give on things like the height and finishes of flood walls in the town, how the upstream storage area will work, and an outline timetable for construction.

The informal style event will consist of ‘stations’ each with information about different elements of the scheme by location, for example High Stanners, the town centre, and the upstream storage area.

Environment Agency project manager for the scheme Thomasin Meadley said:

“We intend to apply for planning permission later in the summer and are keen to give everyone as much detail as we can ahead of this.

“We will welcome feedback on the design of the scheme, our construction timetable and local knowledge of how disruption can be minimised, for example information on popular school routes and business delivery times.”

Jeff Reid, Leader of Northumberland County Council said: “This is an exciting stage in the process as people can now find out much more detailed information on the scheme and have the opportunity to give us vital feedback on certain aspects of the proposals.  The events and drop in sessions are very informal and I would urge people to go along to find out more and take advantage of the opportunity to speak to those people working directly on the scheme.”

Northumbrian Water will also be available at the event, to be held on 10 July 2012,to talk to residents about their planned improvement work to help reduce the likelihood of flooding from their sewer network in the Bennetts Walk area and to upgrade Morpeth sewage treatment works.

Following the 10 July, information on the main flood scheme and staff will be available for those who aren’t able to attend town hall event. Anyone interested can drop into Morpeth Library on:

  • Wednesday 11 July  2pm til 6
  • Saturday 14 July 9.30am til 12.30pm
  • Monday 16 July 2pm til 6pm
  • Tuesday 17 July 9.30am til 12.30pm
