New businesses try out market trading

National Market Fortnight is currently underway and will see budding entrepreneurs have an opportunity to try out market trading from just a tenner with support from Northumberland County Council.

Stalls are being offered at markets managed by the council for just £10 a day to attract new market traders and provide opportunities for new and start-up businesses.

One such business that is keen to give it a go is newly formed eatery, Deli at Number 4 situated on Beaumont Street in Hexham.

Jayne Pope, manager at Deli at Number 4 said, “We are really excited to get the opportunity of setting up a market stall with the simple aim of raising awareness of our business among the local people.

We would like to put a range of our products on display and allow the public to try tasters and buy from the stall.”

With many other delicacies and delights on offer visitors are also being encouraged to come along.

Trial stalls can be considered by anyone from students to small business owners. The council’s market officers will also be available to provide advice and guidance to anyone who wishes to know more about market trading.

Councillor Alan Thompson, executive member responsible for neighbourhood services at Northumberland County Council said:  “We want our markets in Northumberland to be at the heart of the local community and a community asset contributing to future sustainability.

“Attracting traders is the key to keeping our markets healthy and thriving.  We want to provide opportunities for new and start-up businesses and we hope that through promoting this initiative we will get more people involved in market trading.”

Bookings will be taken on a first come first served basis and applicants must not have traded on a Northumberland market during the preceding 12 month period.

The £10 charge will cover the pitch, and where the council provides stalls they will be free too.  Insurance will be covered so long as relevant details are provided.
