Ashington
Town Centre Supplementary Planning Document
The Ashington
Town Centre Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) was adopted
by Northumberland County Council on 24 February 2010. This SPD
relates specifically to the north east part of Ashington Town
Centre and has been developed by the Council with the support of
the Regional Development Agency - One North East and the Homes and
Communities Agency (HCA) to implement policies in the adopted
Wansbeck District Local Plan (2007)
The Council consulted on a range of options
for development in the north eastern part of the town centre
during October 2009 and published a draft SPD in November 2009 upon
which comments were invited from residents, businesses, landowners,
service providers and other organisations with an interest in
Ashington town centre.
The intention of the SPD is to ensure that any
change in the north eastern part of the town centre has the optimum
impact for that area and for the rest of the town centre. The
strategy identified in the SPD has been developed with regard to
anticipated availability of public resources to assist in
delivering the change required to enhance perceptions of the
quality of the town centre. The SPD will be a material
consideration in the determination of planning applications for the
comprehensive redevelopment of the north eastern part of the town
centre and will provide a framework to guide and influence public
sector investment.
The document can be viewed by clicking on the

technical documents including a Baseline Report,
Sustainability Appraisal and Retail Analysis. Links to all
these background documents can be found
