Northumberland encompasses a wide range of
landscapes that have been shaped by geology, soils, climate and
human activity over the generations.

Landscapes include the uplands of the Cheviot
Hills and North Pennines, the agricultural lowlands, the urban
fringe and our coastal seascapes. These Landscapes are more
than just 'the view'. They reflect the complex, interacting natural
and cultural systems that make up each landscape and the
relationship between people, place and nature. Landscapes
share common features but also have their own distinctive
characteristics which make them special.

In Northumberland three areas have been
designated by the Government as being amongst the most important
landscapes in the country, these are:
The
Northumberland National Park
The Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty
The North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty
