SENNTRi, the body established to coordinate regeneration
in South East Northumberland, will be replaced by a team from
Northumberland’s new unitary council.
The new South East Northumberland Regeneration team, which is
fully funded by Northumberland County Council, will carry out the
regeneration roles previously delivered by former district
authorities and SENNTRi. This represents a major commitment by the
new authority to drive forward and deliver regeneration across
South East Northumberland and has, effectively, mainstreamed the
previous role of SENNTRi ahead of schedule.
The move has been supported by former SENNTRi partner agencies,
One North East, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and North
Tyneside Council. During the past year a number of significant
changes have occurred, which have led to this decision:
- The creation of one council for Northumberland means that an
organisation responsible for coordinating regeneration projects
between district councils is no longer needed;
- North Tyneside Council has withdrawn from a formal partnership
arrangement although it remains committed to working jointly with
Northumberland when appropriate to do so;
- The new council for Northumberland has established area
partnerships, including one in South East Northumberland, to engage
partners in the development and delivery of policies, programmes
and projects at area level.
- The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the national agency set
up to create opportunity for people to live in sustainable places
has been established.
Richard Robson, executive director of place for Northumberland
County Council, said: “All of the regeneration projects and good
work started by SENNTRi will be continued by the South East
Northumberland Regeneration team. We have already secured major
investment from both HCA and One North East for a variety of
regeneration projects across South East Northumberland.”
Martin Swales, North Tyneside Council’s strategic director for
development said: “ The development of a joint vision between the
SENNTRi partners over the last decade undoubtedly raised the
national profile of the sub-region and served to engage the active
support of key partners such as One North East and the Homes and
Communities Agency (formerly English Partnerships).
“Together we have made real progress on a wide range of issues,
not least the areas of strategic transport planning and addressing
access to employment opportunities for local people as well as
advancing major physical regeneration schemes.
“We will continue to maintain an effective dialogue with
Northumberland County Council as part of our City Region work and
explore with the new South East Northumberland Regeneration team
the potential for further collaboration, for example on coastal
regeneration and tourism.”
