About the Family Support Team
The Family Support Team operates the Northumberland Support Care
Scheme (NSCS) on behalf of Northumberland County Council Children’s
Services.
The scheme was originally introduced as the Northumberland
Sponsored Day Care Scheme in 1992, following the introduction
of:
- the Children Act 1989
- the Local Authorities statutory duty to provide
services to ‘Children in Need’
Since 1992 the scheme has grown considerably, and has evolved
into the Northumberland Support Care Scheme, providing an essential
county-wide service to children and their families.
The team is made up of Carers, Family Placement Social Workers,
Family Placement Workers, Placement Referral Co-ordinator,
Administration and Finance, Training and Development and
Marketing.
What does the Family Support Team
do?
Services are provided to children, young people and
their families who have been assessed as requiring additional
services to safeguard and promote the welfare of children in need,
by the local FACT teams or the Disabled Children Team, (previously
known as Children’s Social Services), in accordance with the
statutory guidance, Framework for the Assessment of Children in
Need and their Families (Department of Health, 2000).
The team provides services under the
Children Act 1989:
Section
17
Section
47
Section
34
The Family Support Team is instrumental in the development of
Short Break Care services. This is part of the
new requirement for local authorities to provide short break
care services to disabled children and their families.
The Family Support Team works in partnership with the following
Children’s Services teams as part of the Local Authorities relevant
statutory duties and responsibilities. These teams include:

- Integrated FACT Teams (Family and Children's Trust)
- Disabled Children Team
- Children's Support Team
- Foster Care Team

- Children’s Residential Services
- Education Support for Looked-After Children (ESLAC)
