Reorganisation of Schools - Putting the Learner First Programme (PLF)

Proposals for the reorganisation of any school partnership under the Putting the Learner First Programme (PLF) can only be consulted on if there is adequate funding in place to carry out the necessary refurbishment/rebuilding of school premises.

At the moment, the indicative timetable for funding to be in place for Berwick Partnership is 2012.

Milfield First School closure

Executives at Northumberland County Council have agreed to the closure Milfied First School, near Wooler, on 31 August 2009.  In 2008, governors at the school had requested that Northumberland County Council consider a request to carry out consultation on the future of the school as a result of falling pupil numbers over recent years, with only seven pupils enrolled at the school. The six week consultation was approved on 5 November and closed on 16 December 2008.

Since then governors and the head teacher have explored a number of different options for making the school viable, including possible federation with other schools in the area, but none have proven workable. No other viable options were put forward during the consultation period.

The seven pupils who currently attend Milfield will relocate to another local school based on parental preference. However, the catchment area of Milfield will be incorporated into Wooler First School where they will be guaranteed a place if parents chose to accept it.

Northumberland County Council will seek redeployment opportunities for the four members of staff currently employed at Milfield.
