Information about the Berwickshire and North Northumberland European Marine Site

Berwickshire and North Northumberland Coast European Marine Site

The stunning coastline of Northumberland and Berwickshire is known for its windswept sandy beaches, rocky headlands, tidal flats, cliffs and rugged islands. This dramatic scenery continues offshore in the form of an underwater rocky reef which skirts the coastline from Alnmouth to Fast Castle Head in Scotland.

This diverse landscape, above and below the waves, provides a multitude of habitats for an astonishing variety of marine life.

This 650 square kilometre stretch of coast and sea has been designated a European Marine Site (EMS) to protect its six special features. The features are habitats, mud and sandflats, large inlets and shallow bays, rocky reefs, sea caves and the main species that rely on these habitats, birds and seals.anemone

The Berwickshire and North Northumberland Coast European Marine Site Implementation Officer helps the relevant and competent authorities in fulfilling their duties under the Habitats Regulations 1994. This includes monitoring water quality, anchoring effects, aquaculture developments, bait collection, coastal defences, fisheries management, diving and land based recreation management, dredging, litter, oil and chemical spillage monitoring and port and harbour related developments.
