Adult Drug and Alcohol Treatment Procurement for service users, carers, public
What is happening?
The Northumberland Drug and Alcohol Action
Team (DAAT) is designing a new way of offering you drug and
alcohol treatment in Northumberland. This will include
re-designing and re-procuring all adult drug and alcohol
treatment services.

Why?
We have reviewed the current systems and
decided that the current treatment systems needs to be more
effective and better at meeting the needs of service users.
What’s the objective?
- To create a system that best meets
the needs of the local population and national policy, including
the national drug
strategy 2010 and the national
alcohol strategy 2012.
- To have a recovery-focused system that
will increase the number of people engaging in and successfully
leaving treatment and maintaining recovery, therefore reducing the
number of people re-entering treatment.
What does this mean for service users?
A new treatment system will commence on
1st April 2013 - until then, current
services will continue. We believe that these changes will
make service more suited to service users’ needs and will increase
the numbers successfully completing treatment. We will
ensure the transition will be as smooth as possible with the
least disruption to service users and we will keep service users
and carers informed of all key developments.
The process:
To make sure that we get the best possible
treatment system, we have worked with a range of different
people (including service users, carers, treatment professionals)
to discuss what a successful drug and alcohol treatment system
for Northumberland should look like. We have carried out a
range of consultation activities with service users including focus
groups and questionnaires to seek their views and this feedback
is helping to shape our design for the new system. We
have also worked with partner agencies such as housing providers
and Jobcentre Plus to best understand how we can all work
together.
We are currently writing a single service
specification for both drug and alcohol treatment provision based
on the consultation we have done. We are seeking feedback
about this specification from both professionals and service users
to ensure it will meet the needs of people in treatment. Once
this has been agreed, we will go out to tender and potential
providers will have the opportunity to bid to deliver the
service.
These bids will be evaluated by a panel of
experts and a preferred provider will be identified. Once a
provider has been decided upon, there will be a hand-over phase
from the old to new treatment system. The new system will be in
place from 1st April 2013.
Contact:
Listening to different views and ideas is an
important part of the process. We want to hear from a whole range
of people, including, service users (current and
former), carers and members of the public.
