The Landscape Character Assessment for Northumberland
The Northumberland Landscape Character Assessment has drawn together evidence from existing assessments in Northumberland and has undertaken new work to ensure consistency between areas. It also takes account of new information on historic landscape character, climate change and other environmental changes.
The Landscape Classification provides an understanding of the character of the landscape in Northumberland. It defines 44 Landscape Character Types, sub-divided into 108 Landscape Character Areas. The map and associated descriptions provide a good background to understanding landscape and its local distinctiveness and provide a baseline against which change can be assessed. This second document sets out principles for each landscape character type which seek to maintain and enhance the inherent properties most valued in the landscape. At this stage, the Council has noted the principles and guidelines set out in the document and they will be assessed and considered through the preparation of the Local Development Framework Core Strategy. The scale of assessment undertaken cannot provide in full the detail required for consideration of specific sites or planning applications. It provides a context for such matters but is not a substitute for detailed site specific landscape analysis and assessment in such cases.
