What is a Book Club?

also known as: How do I run a book club?, How do I start a book club?, What is a reading club?, What is a reading group?.

Find out what a book club is, how to join one and how we can help you to start one and keep it running smoothly.

What is a Book Club?

Books and Laptop

A book club, or reading group, is a collection of people who come together regularly to discuss books.  There are normally several members who all read the same book and then talk about it together.

Traditionally book clubs meet in person, which makes them a very social experience and can be much more personal.  There are also online book communities such as Northumberland Readers, which tend to be more flexible as they do not have some of the restrictions that traditional book clubs do.

There are 10,000 book clubs linked to libraries alone!  (The Reading Agency).  They are popular community groups and there is sure to be one to suit you.  If you can't find one that appeals, why not read on below to find out how to start a book club?

Reading groups bring people together, improve members' wellbeing and help local communities to engage.  (The Reading Agency).
