Council welcomes dropping of fishing ban plans

The Council has welcomed news that plans for a fishing ban off Holy Island have been dropped.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) had been considering whether to designate the island as a Highly Protected Marine Area (HPMA), meaning a ban on fishing in the waters off the island.

However it’s now been confirmed that Lindisfarne will now not be one of these designated areas.

Councillor Colin Hardy, who represents the Norham and Islandshires ward, said: "This is fantastic news.

"I am proud to have played a part in the campaign to save the livelihood of the local fishermen, their industry their community and their heritage.
Congratulations to everyone involved and thank you to everyone who gave their support."

Councillor Wojciech Ploszaj, Cabinet Member for Business, said: “There were real concerns if these proposals had gone ahead that many would leave the island, not only impacting their own futures but also that of generations to come.

“We know how vital the fishing industry is in this part of Northumberland and it would have been a huge blow to the area. I’m pleased DEFRA has listened carefully to local feeling in making this decision.”

DEFRA said they had "recognised the strength of feeling" surrounding the Holy Island proposal and were grateful for the views and evidence the community had shared during the consultation process.
