Council continuing to support residents over Easter

Throughout Easter and beyond the County Council is continuing to support local people and community organisations that are doing so much to provide assistance to residents at this time.

With the ongoing inflationary rise in the cost of living and pressures being experienced by some of its most vulnerable residents, the Council has provided over £520,000 of financial support to support households this Easter.

All families with eligible children who receive free school meals will receive £50 per child to support with rising costs. An additional £175,000 has been provided to local organisations who are directly supporting residents, such as foodbanks.

Councillor Wendy Pattison, Cabinet Member for Adults Wellbeing, said: “We work closely with our partners throughout the year to support anyone who is struggling – and we know holiday times can be stressful for some.

“We would urge anyone who needs our help to contact us through Northumberland Communities Together: 01670 620015 between 9am to 6pm, seven days a week or NCT@northumberland.gov.uk

Councillor Guy Renner-Thompson, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Children’s Services, added: “The council is committed to supporting our young people and their families and I am so proud of how the county has really come together to offer these enriching activities over the holidays where young people can meet friends, learn new skills, enjoy delicious meals and make memories.

“We also have our libraries, leisure centres, community and family hubs – all offering activities, along with a network of warm spaces where residents are assured of a warm welcome.”

Over Easter the Council has  worked with an army of voluntary organisations and volunteers to provide its well attended Holiday Activity and Food Programme funded by the Department for Education (DfE).

These include 36 camps delivered by 31 providers, offering 1,731 places and are being delivered across the county, including, Amble, Berwick, Ashington, Blyth, Prudhoe, Bedlington, Wooler and Hexham.

This Easter’s programme also included surf and paddle board lessons, a variety of outdoor based activities and a touring pantomime.
