Phased parking planned for Northumberland Line station

As work on the Northumberland Line project gathers pace, a phased approach to car parking is now being planned for one of the stations.

An application is due to be submitted to Northumberland County Council to allow a phased delivery of car parking spaces at Seaton Delaval station.

Although planning permission to build the station was secured in November 2021, the change reflects a recent review of programme delivery at the site, and reflects concerns raised by local residents about the size of the car park.

The new plans will see the car park constructed in two phases, in line with the demand forecasting for the site.

There are no changes proposed to the number of car parking spaces, only to the timing of the full build out.

Specific mechanisms will be put in place for monitoring car park usage to ensure the second phase of the car park is constructed at the right time to accommodate increasing demand.

The phased delivery will mean that the full extent of car parking spaces can be delivered in the longer term (by 2039), based on the emerging pattern of demand at each station.

Phasing of the car parks at other stations on the Northumberland Line is also being considered and reviewed.

Main construction work on the Northumberland Line is due to get underway this summer.

The scheme, which will see six new stations, deliver 18 miles of upgraded track, access improvements and new signal locations, is due to be open by December 2023.

It's planned to run a half hourly passenger service between Newcastle and Ashington – stopping at Bedlington, Bebside, Newsham, Seaton Delaval and Northumberland Park along the way.
