Happy couple first to be married in historic Hexham House

06 Sep 2017

It was the start of a new chapter - not only for the bride and groom, but also the historic building where their wedding took place.

Jo and Paul Johnson’s   ‘big day’  on Friday 1 September was the first wedding to be held inside Hexham House which has recently undergone a major restoration  to transform it into  a beautiful new wedding venue for the town.

The interior of the Grade II house that is owned by Northumberland County Council  has undergone a £1.5m face-lift to convert it into a wedding complex, with the creation of a new register office, two wedding ceremony rooms and seven luxury self-catering holiday apartments complete with a bridal suite.

After their wedding Mrs Johnson said:  “ We’ve always loved the venue but were absolutely thrilled with how beautiful it all looked on our wedding day. It was just perfect. It really is one of the most impressive register offices that we’ve ever seen.

“ The ceremony room was elegant but also had an intimate feel about it. There were 65 people in the room to share the moment with us, but it felt like it was just the two of us standing there at the front saying our vows. It was a very special moment.  We’ve got some stunning photographs and  the beautiful gardens  in front of the historic house provided the perfect backdrop for these.

“It was always going to be a very special day for us but I think being the very first couple to get married in the building, which has such a long history in the town,  made it even more so.

Jo and the bridal party stopped in the new luxury apartments above Hexham House the night before the wedding.

“ Spending the night at the venue took all the stress out of the next morning as we could get ready at the venue and didn’t have to worry about transport, traffic and arriving on time. It also  added to the occasion as I could relax  with family and friends the evening before.”

Paul and Jo had  guests attending who travelled from  as far afield as Ireland and America, with many stopping in accommodation locally.

The couple held their  reception and after party  in one of the function suites in nearby Hexham Abbey.  Paul said  “ After the wedding service the bridal party and guests walked across to the Abbey which is just a few minutes away. It was a relaxed and magical day.”
