Household waste permits

You will require a permit to take your waste to the HWRC if you want to use a van, ‘trade type vehicle’ and / or trailer which is longer than 5ft (1.52m). Very large vans / lorries and trailers over 9ft 10inch (3metres) will not be permitted for health and safety reasons.

Permits are

  • Free of charge
  • Valid for one visit (you can request more than one permit when applying)
  • Posted to your property or available for collection at a nominated council information point (we cannot email permits)

We aim to process requests for permits and dispatch them within two workings day of receipt.

Hazardous household waste

Our HWRCs accept certain types of hazardous waste:

  • used engine oil
  • car batteries
  • household batteries
  • gas cylinders
  • fridges and freezers
  • fluorescent tubes
  • televisions and computer monitors

For other types of hazardous household waste, there is a free collection service which is organised by the County Council. Examples of hazardous waste that may be eligible for the free collection service include some garden chemicals, flammable solvents and asbestos.

Using our Household Waste Recovery Centres

We have commitments we make to the users of our sites, and ask users to follow our code of conduct too.

As a site user we give a commitment to you that we will:-

  • Offer assistance and be courteous and polite at all times.
  • Maintain a clean, tidy and safe site.
  • Maximise recycling on the site.

We also ask that you:-

  • separate your waste into different categories before you arrive.
  • be considerate to other site users.
  • recycle wherever possible.
  • remain polite and courteous.
  • leave any comments on the forms provided. So that we know what you think about the service and where things could be improved even further

Please have a look at our leaflet which shows how we are performing

In March 2009 we asked HWRC customers for their feedback:

  • 100% were satisfied with the facilities
  • 100% said they felt safe using the sites
  • 98% found staff to be very/fairly helpful
  • 94% percent found the containers easier to use
  • 98% found the layout easier to follow
  • 98% found the sites had improved
  • 93% found the longer opening hours more helpful
  • 90% were very satisfied with the centres’ overall level of service and 10%were fairly satisfied
  • 89% said they found the sites clean and tidy
  • 89% of those people who needed a permit to deposit their waste said they were happy with the speed it was produced and all said the permit had helped them deposit their waste.

110 customers completed the questionnaire. The biggest responses to the survey were at Hexham, Kirkley West Thorn, Prudhoe and Morpeth, but every one of the council’s 13 recycling centres, which are operated by recycling and resource management company SITA UK, was represented in the questionnaire, each delivering positive results.

If you would like to provide feedback on our household waste recovery sites, please email ask@northumberland.gov.uk or fill in one of the customer feedback forms at the depots.

Recycling points – drop off / bring sites

These smaller self-service sites are positioned in convenient locations, often in town and village car parks, allowing residents to recycle items such as glass and textiles.
