The Financial Management Standard in Schools (FMSiS) was
introduced as a self management tool for schools in 2004 and was
developed by the Institute of Public Finance (IPF), on behalf of
Department of Children, Schools and Families. The assessment tool
allows a school to map where it stands by comparison with the
Financial Management Standard and helps it to achieve longer term
improvement in financial management through targeted action
planning.
The FMSiS was added to the Scheme for Financing Schools in
October 2006 through directed revisions, which, from January 2007,
requires that meeting the Standard is now a legal requirement for
schools. Schools are assessed every 3 years but the DCSF does
require schools to maintain the Financial Management Standard
between assessments and the Local Authority requires confirmation
of this to be provided annually.
Northumberland Schools have been assessed on a rolling programme
with the final group of schools undertaking assessment during 2010.
