'Drain' is the term given to a pipe that carries waste and water away from houses. When one drain connects to another it becomes a sewer. Gullies or grids are the system in place to remove water from highways. Northumberland County Council maintain the road gully drainage system. The public sewer system is maintained by Northumbrian Water.
