Personal touches

Personal touches

The following suggestions are only for licensed venue ceremonies. For our council venues at Morpeth Town Hall, Northumberland Hall, Alnwick Queens Hall Hexham and soon to be available Hexham house, please contact us for advice on personalising your ceremony on 01665 602870.

Finding inspiration

There are lots of ways to add personal touches to your ceremony, making it extra special. You can view our library website for advice on where to look for poetry and readings, as well as books on handmade wedding stationary, wedding cake decorations and how to make the perfect wedding speech. The internet is also a great resource for inspiration. Please remember that yours is a civil ceremony and there should be no religious content.

Ceremony personal touches

If you wish to include any of the following in your ceremony, please contact us to discuss further. Also make sure you include them in your ceremony form, which will be included in the pack we send to you.

The rose ceremony

This is a simple yet moving ceremony where the couple exchange two roses symbolising the giving and receiving of their love for each other. The roses can be given to the couple by members of their family, friends or even the registrar. All wording of a ceremony can be changed to suit your needs for a more personalised touch. An example of the wording can be found here. For further advice, please call us on 01665 602870.

A unity candle ceremony

This ceremony can be used in many ways and you can customise it to how you want. Whether you are celebrating a unity of two families, or you wish to remember loved ones who can’t be with your on your day. An example could be the registrar inviting two family members to light a candle, representing each of your families. From these two candles, the couple light a centre candle representing their union and that of their families. An example of the wording can be found here. For further advice, please call us on 01665 602870.

The sand ceremony

This very ancient ceremony is similar to the candle ceremony, with the advantage of leaving a permanent memento of your special day.

In this ritual, the couple ceremoniously pour different coloured sand into one special container. The flowing sand and blending of the colours symbolises bringing together two lives. The two sands represent everything the couple have been, or will become, in the future. An example of the wording can be found here. For further advice, please call us on 01665 602870.

Legal vows and promises

Specific legal wording must be used in certain places of the ceremony but you still have the choice of which version of the words you want to say.

Choosing your vows

Lawfully, there are only two places in the ceremony where specific wording must be used:
  • during the declaratory
  • during the contractual vows
However, it is still possible to choose from three legal options, which we show you in your ceremony pack.

Exchanging of rings

We offer a choice of five ring vows, shown in your ceremony pack. However, we also invite you to create your own.

Personal promises

Your ceremony pack also contains several options if you wish to make personal promises to each other. We are more than happy for you to provide your own but no wording may be used from any religious ceremony.

Music

Music can add a special atmosphere to your ceremony. There are four key points where music could be used:
  • as your guests are assembling
  • for the entrance of the bride
  • during the signing of the register and photographs
  • your exit
You are welcome to have a live performance, instrumental or vocal as part of the ceremony itself, or in place of a reading.

Readings

Whether a reading is humorous, serious, poetic or classic, it will always add something personal to your ceremony and is a lovely way to involve your family or friends. The registrar will be happy to read for you, too. The library is a great place to look for readings for your ceremony.

Themed weddings

We encourage all unique and personal approaches to your special day and themed weddings are a great way to do this. Please discuss your ideas for a themed ceremony with our ceremony co-ordination team first on 01665 602870.
